The AI coding boom has a quality problem, and small businesses should stop treating it like a developer-only debate.
One viral thread from product leader Aakash Gupta pulled together a set of findings that are hard to ignore. The headline numbers are blunt: 41% of code shipped in 2025 was AI-generated or AI-assisted, AI-generated code showed a 1.7x higher defect rate than human-written code, and in at least one randomized controlled trial, experienced developers using AI tools were 19% slower than developers working without them.
That cuts against the easy sales pitch. The usual promise is simple: more code, shipped faster, with less effort. But AI code quality is now the real constraint. If output goes up while defects, review time, and cleanup work go up too, the savings disappear.
For SMBs, the deeper problem is not that AI sometimes writes bad code. Bad code is old news. The real shift is that the old assumption of software work just broke: the author and the debugger are no longer the same person.
The ownership model changed
Before AI coding tools became normal, even mediocre code usually had an owner. Someone wrote it. Someone knew why it looked that way. Someone could explain the shortcut, the strange conditional, or the ugly database query. The code might have been messy, but it had a human attached to it.

"The tests passed" is not enough. Ask whether AI-written code gets the same scrutiny for readability, security, edge cases, and maintainability as human-written code.
3. Where is AI allowed and where is it not?
Good teams use AI selectively. They may allow it for boilerplate, unit tests, and admin tooling, while banning it from security-sensitive flows, payment logic, migrations, or critical infrastructure changes without deeper review.
4. Can another developer take this over cold?
That is a great proxy for quality. If a competent new engineer would struggle to understand the system, you have a documentation and ownership problem already.
5. Are you measuring defects, not just delivery speed?
If your team says AI made them faster, ask what happened to bug rates, rollback frequency, support tickets, and time-to-fix. Speed without quality is just faster accumulation of future work.
A practical AI coding policy for SMBs
You do not need to ban AI coding tools. That would be the wrong lesson.
The practical move is to treat AI like a power tool: useful, dangerous, and worth controlling.
A sensible SMB policy looks like this:
- Use AI for drafts, repetitive code, test generation, and low-risk internal tools.
- Require human review by someone who can actually maintain the result.
- Document architecture decisions, not just code output.
- Track post-release defects on AI-assisted work separately.
- Avoid letting one person become a prompt operator for systems they cannot explain.
- Prefer smaller, understandable changes over giant AI-generated feature dumps.
That last point matters most. The goal is not maximum code generation. The goal is reliable software that your business can afford to live with.
The bottom line
The AI coding market spent the last year selling speed. The next year will be about accountability.
If the latest numbers hold, AI code quality is not a niche engineering concern. It is a management issue, a hiring issue, and a risk issue for any business building software.
The question is no longer whether AI can write code. Of course it can.
The real question is whether your business is shipping code that somebody truly understands, owns, and can fix when the easy demo turns into a hard production problem.
